As we look forward to the new opportunities 2025 will bring, Groundwork North Wales celebrates a year filled with impactful projects and strengthened community connections.
Groundwork North Wales, dedicated to creating positive impacts together for our people, places and planet, has made significant strides in our community over the last year.
Notable achievements in 2024:
Light Up Our Town: Buckley’s town centre was brought to life with a wonderful display of colourful lanterns, organised by community café Refurbs Buckley. With funding support from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and Flintshire County Council, the event was a celebration of the town’s heritage and community spirit.
Community Rail Partnership: Groundwork North Wales is delighted to announce that both the 3 Counties Connected and Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast Community Rail Partnerships (CRP) who they host have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 National Community Rail Awards, celebrating outstanding achievements in community engagement, sustainable travel, and creativity.
River Gwenfro Together: Launched earlier this year, the River Gwenfro Together project aims to revive the river Gwenfro in Wrexham. This project, led by Welsh Dee Valley and Groundwork North Wales, has engaged local residents, decision makers and businesses to develop a comprehensive action plan to identify and address the challenges faced by the river.
Nant Mill Fun Day: Groundwork North Wales joined Nant Mill Community Trust for the return of their Fun Day and Duck Race, raising funds to support the trust. The event is possible thanks to development funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players, along with funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and support funding from partner organisations.
Training Partnership with NE Wales ACL: Groundwork Training are pleased to announce new and refreshed Digital Courses in partnership with North East Wales Adult Community Learning, (ACL), starting in the new year. These courses are fully funded and free for those aged 19+ living in Wrexham and Flintshire, and will be delivered in an informal, friendly and learner-centred way.
Top 100 Social Enterprises: Groundwork North Wales has been recognised amongst the top 100 social enterprises in the UK in the NatWest SE100 Index 2024 for the 5th year running. Commenting on being recognised for the organisation’s achievements, Karen Balmer, Groundwork North Wales CEO, said: “This achievement is a testament to the great work that our teams are undertaking on a daily basis.”
Safer Streets Outreach: The Safer Streets 5 project is funded by the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), with the aim of raising awareness among young people about the impact of anti-social behaviour on their local community. Groundwork North Wales have been actively working with secondary school pupils from Rhosnesni, encouraging them to participate in community-focused projects. This initiative not only helps to improve the local community but also fosters a sense of responsibility and community spirit among the youth.
Pedal Power Fundraising: A Christmas Bazaar event hosted by Pedal Power, the all-ability cycling charity, raised over £3,500 at Grosvenor’s Eaton Estate. The charity relies on fundraising such as this to support day-to-day running. Guests were greeted with a glass of fizz and enjoyed festive tunes performed by Delta Ladies Choir. A delicious spread of festive food, supplied by Caffi Cyfle, set the tone for the evening, and attendees had the chance to browse and shop from a range of local retailers offering unique Christmas gifts.
Looking Forward to 2025:
Groundwork North Wales extends heartfelt thanks to our funders, partners, and community for making 2024 an extraordinary year. As we step into 2025, we remain driven to create lasting, positive impacts and build an even brighter future together.
