This Invasive Species Week, Wild ground is highlighting the growing threat non-native species poses to UK wildlife, and the vital role we can all play in fighting back.

According to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), there are currently 195 invasive non-native species in the UK, many of which are having a significant negative impact on native biodiversity. In fact, the Natural History Museum now reports that non-native plant species outnumber native ones, with indigenous species continuing to decline.
At Wild ground, staff and dedicated volunteers are working hard to remove invasive species from our nature reserves, helping restore balance to these fragile ecosystems.
You can join the effort, too. Here’s how:
- Clean your shoes after every walk to prevent spreading seeds or spores
- Check the invasiveness of any plants before adding them to your garden
- Record sightings of invasive species using the ‘INNS Mapper’ app
- Volunteer with local environmental organisations
Every small action helps protect our natural heritage.
